Agile Thoughts

Why does the Scrum Master want me to be an entrepreneur? I’m just a Product Owner.

Yesterday, I attended a Professional Product Owner II training, and I noticed something intriguing. There was a sense of indignation among some of the less experienced Product Owners and Managers in the room when the topic of being more entrepreneurial came up. This got me thinking about how to better explain the connection between Product Owners and entrepreneurs as it seems to me to be crucial in the role of a Product Owner.

What’s the deal with Scrum Masters wanting us to be entrepreneurs?

Let’s begin by clarifying what the Scrum Master’s intentions are. As a Product Owner, your primary responsibility is to maximize the value of the product. This involves working closely with stakeholders, managing the Product Backlog, and ensuring the team is aligned with the product vision.

When a Scrum Master encourages a Product Owner to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, they’re not asking them to run their own business. Instead, they want the Product Owner to approach their role with the same passion, commitment, and vision that an entrepreneur brings to their startup.

So, how does thinking like an entrepreneur help a Product Owner?

  1. Ownership and accountability.
An entrepreneurial Product Owner owns their product’s success and treats it as their own baby. This sense of responsibility leads to better decision-making and a stronger commitment to delivering value.
  2. Customer-centric focus.
Entrepreneurs are all about customer satisfaction. By putting customers at the center of every decision, Product Owners can create products that truly resonate with their target audience.
  3. Innovation and creativity.
Entrepreneurs have a knack for innovation. Embracing this mindset encourages Product Owners to think outside the box and find creative solutions to challenges.
  4. Risk-taking and adaptability.
Successful entrepreneurs are comfortable taking calculated risks and adapting to change. This quality helps Product Owners navigate the uncertainties of product development and pivot quickly when needed.

How can a Product Owner develop an entrepreneurial mindset?

All it takes is a slight change in looking at the reality. Ideas that can help with this:

  1. Stay curious.
Cultivate a habit of continuous learning and exploration. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and seek opportunities for growth and improvement. Be brave.
  2. Embrace failure.
Mistakes are a natural part of growth. Rather than fearing failure, learn from it and use it to make better decisions moving forward.
  3. Network and collaborate.
Forge relationships with other Product Owners, Scrum Masters, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. Share knowledge and insights, and learn from each other’s experiences.
  4. Set ambitious goals.
Challenge yourself to aim high and push the boundaries of what’s possible with your product.

It’s a book-size topic, but I tried to simplify it as much as possible. The essence of why Scrum Masters encourage Product Owners to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset lies in the drive to create a standout product that delivers exceptional value. Keep in mind that being bold and taking calculated risks can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
So go ahead, channel your entrepreneurial spirit, and watch your product thrive. Good luck! 🙂
